Nightstay – Emergency Overnight Accommodation
Who is eligible to stay at Nightstay?
Nightstay uses the following priorities when allocating an overnight tenancy
Priority 1: 16-17 year olds, both care leavers and non-care leavers
Priority 2: 18-21 year olds, care leavers (considered only after 2.00pm)
Priority 3: 18-21 year old, non-care leavers who are considered to be vulnerable (considered only after 2.00pm)
Priority 4: out of borough 16-17 year olds (considered only after 4.00pm)
How can someone get a place at Nightstay?
Anyone aged 16 & 17 years old, who finds themselves with nowhere to live has to go to see the Leaving Care at the BASE building (tel: 01204 337376). The team there will check the circumstances and try to arrange for family mediation if that is appropriate.
There are very few housing options open to 16 & 17 year olds, for two main reasons:
- There is a great shortage of flats for rent in Bolton.
- Social Landlords do not give tenancies to anyone under 18 years of age without a guarantor; and private landlords are reluctant to give tenancies to any single person under 25 years of age.
If nowhere can be found for the young person to stay, Leaving Care will book a young person into Nightstay. A bed at Nightstay has to be booked everyday.
Anyone aged 18-21 years who finds themselves with nowhere to live, must go to Bolton’s Housing Options Centre on Silverwell Lane (previously known as Housing Advice or Homeless Welfare). Telephone 01204 335900. The staff there will assess the housing options available to the young person. If Nightstay seems to be suitable, the Housing Options staff have to wait until 2.00pm when they can check to see if any places are available that night.
